I’m thrilled to be a part of TOS Homeschool Review Crew and to share my first Crew review! I received a free Yearly Membership to SchoolhouseTeachers.com, a division of The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine. In exchange, I’m providing my review of how we’re using this resource in our homeschool.  Affiliate links are included in this post.

Before I get started on which courses we tried, I first want to briefly familiarize you with our homeschooling details.  This will give you some background on our homeschooling style, student ages/grade levels, and interests which may help you make a decision if SchoolhouseTeachers.com will be a good fit for you.

My husband and I have been married for over 11 years and have two daughters, 10 and 8.  Their grade levels range from 3rd-7th. That’s one of the benefits of homeschooling – you can teach at a level that fits their strengths, and combine subjects like history, science, and literature that multiple students will understand.

As you know from my blog, I work from home, so finding materials that my daughters can use independently is important for when I need to work. I generally get up early to do the bulk of my work and let the kids sleep in until whenever they wake up. Sleep is underrated! Then, I either start with the subjects I do with them, or set them up to do independent school work until I’m ready to read aloud and help.

We decided to start school in the summer this year so that we could take the month of December off of “formal” school.  I feel like that gives a nice break over the holidays to do fun activities, focus on volunteering, making crafts and baking, and generally enjoying the season.  I like to incorporate educational opportunities during this time off that we may not do much of over the course of our normal semesters.  My kids enjoy this too because they get a chance to really dig into topics that they are interested in and not have anything else to distract them.

One of the subjects I wanted to focus on during our break was character traits, and when I found out that SchoolhouseTeachers.com had this course available, I was elated.  It was perfect timing!

SchoolhouseTeachers.com is designed to be a one-stop shop for practically every subject and grade level. With over 300 courses for pre-highschool levels, you’re certain to find something delightful to use for your homeschool.  In fact, over 5000 homeschool families use these courses on a regular basis.

I was pleased to find out that SchoolhouseTeachers.com doesn’t use common core!  Another bonus is that there is only ONE membership fee that will cover your entire family.  The more students you have, the lower the per student price becomes.  That’s a win in my opinion!

I have been using the Learning About Character Traits course with both of my girls because December is an ideal time to work on encouraging loving attitudes towards others. Since we didn’t have a lot of extra time during the busy Christmas season, I picked out suggested books that we own for each character trait.

Here is a list of the books we used and corresponding character lessons:

  1. The Princess and the Kiss – Character trait: Sincere.
  2. The Courage of Sarah Noble – Character trait: Courageous.
  3. The Hundred Dresses – Character trait: Compassionate.
  4. Anne of Green Gables  – Character trait: Responsible & Independent

Each lesson comes with multiple printables which enhance discussions on how the characters acted while portraying the traits the lesson focuses on.  Both of my children enjoyed finding instances where the story reflected a quality that would be beneficial in their own lives.

What you’ll need to maximize these lessons:

Besides the incredibly valuable membership to SchoolhouseTeachers.com, I’d recommend having the following on hand to best complete these lessons:

  1.  A book or two that covers the character trait you want to work on.  The author of these lessons has provided a comprehensive PDF which lists 3 recommended books for each of the 40 lessons.  You can make it easy on yourself and browse the list of books for ones you already own or take the list to your library to find ones you haven’t read yet.

A snippet of one of the “Sincere” pages.

  2. A good printer.  While these printables are in color, the color is not necessary to the usefulness of the lessons.  Since we print a LOT, we invested in a laser printer and printed the lessons in black and white.
  3. Pens/Crayons/Markers/Pencils.  I’m sure you probably have plenty of these already!

That’s it! These lessons are incredibly simple and straightforward, but impactful.

I spent some time picking out more courses that we will be using during our next semester such as keyboarding and geography, and I’m chomping at the bit to get started!

SchoolhouseTeachers.com can be used as a sole source for curriculum, or as a supplement to whatever you’re already using.  From printables to streaming videos, there’s something for every lifestyle and learning style.

The price is unbeatable, especially before January 15th,2017 when you can
