I used to sit when I was working at the computer, but several years ago I realized that sitting on my butt for hours at a time was detrimental to my health. I couldn’t justify spending hundreds of dollars on a fancy adjustable stand up desk. I had to make do with what I had.
I’ve changed things up depending on where I’m working. I now have a counter-height desk, well, workbench, where I can alternate between standing and sitting.
The following 10 problems are aggravated by prolonged sitting:
- Foggy Brain
- Strained Neck
- Sore Shoulders & Back
- Heart Disease
- Over Productive Pancreas
- Colon Cancer
- Disc Damage
- Weak Abs
- Tight Hips
- Soft Glutes
The folks at Custom Made came up with this GREAT infographic on the benefits of stand up desks. The best part is you don’t need to spend ANY MONEY, you can rig one up yourself with stuff you have already in your home.

If I thought I could stand up for the extended period of time I am on the computer I would definitely try this.
I like the stand-up version of a desk. I get tired of sitting for too long at one stretch.
I love this article! Like LOVE!!! I love sitting at my desk but after a few hours I like to stand! I often find myself pushing my chair to the side and kneeling on the floor so my back is straight. Thank you so much for sharing this!! Love it!!! =D
Great post. I read somewhere that sitting is the new smoking, and since practicing yoga I realized how much the slouching at my desk has affected my vertebrae.
I’m definitely thinking of creating a standup desk. Thanks so much for sharing! #HomeMattersParty
I love that you posted this! This is actually what I’m doing in the new house we’re building. It’s so much healthier to stand and I definitely notice the difference in my energy and focus.
It’s funny, I sometimes do move my computer to a place where I can stand to do my work just because it feels more comfortable. Now I know why. thanks for sharing at the #HomeMattersParty 🙂 Hope to see you again next week.
