There are many fundamental yet challenging aspects of running a business these days. While not all business functions are as fun as the job you want to actually do, they are essential.
As a business owner, you’ll likely need to develop skills and expertise in many areas, and carrying out these many duties can stretch you thin, leaving you unable to dedicate time to what you really want to do.
But what are your options if you are unable to, or even unwilling, to perform the mundane, perfunctory tasks of running a business?
Outsource
Outsourcing is a strategic move that can bring a welcome relief to business owners. It allows you to delegate certain tasks to a third party, freeing up your time to focus on what you do best. Typically, outsourced activities require expert knowledge and skill sets or are time-consuming. Many small businesses find success with outsourcing tasks such as bookkeeping, cybersecurity, IT management, marketing, and HR. Your outsourcing partner will have the relevant skills and experience to enhance your business, giving you a sense of control over your operations and a greater feeling of security.
However, when considering outsourcing, it’s not a good idea to simply taking on anyone and everyone to complete work you don’t want to do or don’t have time for. This amount of delegation can have the opposite effect, as there are too many variables involved in running your business and too many people to oversee to ensure your standards are met and adhered to.
Automate
If outsourcing isn’t for you, then automation is needed in your business. Essentially, you are getting the job done with minimal input from you as the software is taking over the bulk of the work. Once you set up your preferred choice of automation software, all you need to do is input the required information or adjust the settings and allow it to do what it needs to do without you. This can be tasks such as data collection or interpretation; it can be content writing, social media scheduling, you can automate emails, invoices, compliance monitoring, daily reporting, supply chain management, and so much more. This efficiency can make you feel more productive and less stressed.
The software you use to perform these tasks will likely come with a one-off or ongoing fee and support from the provider, so you need to factor this into your budget. However, this is an excellent compromise if you don’t want to outsource.
Hire Employees
Lastly, hiring employees is your best option for completing the work and ensuring everything stays in-house. Hiring employees can give you others to rely on in your business to help support you and complete things when needed. From hiring an administrative assistant to someone to handle custom service, an IT team, or even sales rep employees can bring a great deal of value to your business, making you feel more supported and secure in your business operations.
However, like with anything, there are important considerations to make when hiring employees, such as setting up an EIN, registering with the government so they know you’re hiring employees, insurance coverage, HR, payroll, insurance, equipment, hiring costs, and more. So, it’s worth your time deciding if this is really the best option for you.
