One of the most important decisions you can make when you first begin working from home is how to set up your office. This is especially important if you have small children. In order to make your work-at-home space productive and efficient, you need to keep the rest of the family in mind. Balancing their needs with the needs of your business is key to being successful. There are several things to consider in order to create the perfect space that allows success in both family and business life.

Functionality

Creating a space that is completely functional will only happen when you figure out your needs. If you have small children at home you may want to set up a centralized space so you can keep a watchful eye on them. Depending on the size of your house you may want to set up a bassinet or playpen for children when they are napping. What are the technology needs for your business? You need to make sure there are enough electrical outlets, sufficient lighting, and storage for any equipment you may have. Your needs will be dependent on the type of business you have. This is key in finding a space that will work best for you and your family.

Safety First

Organization and storage go a long way when it comes to creating a safe working environment. Leave nothing you don’t want to be messed up out in the open. Little fingers have a tendency to find that one paper you need for client work. Purchase a file cabinet and start organizing and storing right away. Make sure all outlets are covered or away from little eyes and hands. If you have chosen to have a completely separate space that has a door make sure to keep it locked when you are done working for the day.

Be Creative

There are many ways you can brighten up your space and make it easy on the eyes. One way is to strategically place the wonderful artwork your children make for you. Show it off for everyone to see. The kids will love it that you are allowing their creations to have a place in your workspace. Besides brightening up the area, it will make you smile every time you look at it and help you remember why you started this journey in the first place.  It’s also helpful to add some inspirational and motivating quotes to a “vision board” that you’ll see to encourage you during long client projects.

Your workspace is where you are going to spend a lot of time during the day. It’s important to plan it out as well as you can ahead of time so you can make sure it’s just the way you want it. You want to create a space that is not only kid friendly and kid proof, but also somewhere that you can see yourself getting a lot done. A well planned out workspace is going to allow for more efficient, productive days ahead.

Don’t worry if you don’t have the funds to go all out. You can create a beautiful spot to work with finds from thrift stores, garage sales, craigslist, and yes, even the curb!
